What Are The Uses Of A Centralizer Or A Spacer System In Construction Drilling

A centralizer and a spacer system, sometimes called casing spacers or pipe spiders, are designed to provide support to pipes and to help centralize and space piping or pumps that are placed inside large diameter piping or casings. Spacer systems are manufactured from various materials like stainless steel, epoxy coated steel and polyethylene plastic.  They are very easy to installand can be effortlessly done by just one person.

When to use a centralizer and a spacer system

APS centralizers are manufactured from injection molded, high density polyethylene.The plastic centralizers and spacer system can be applied to different kinds of piping system including fiberglass, polyethylene, PVC and even steel.

• Oil and gas production -  Centralizers are often used on oil and gas production wells when verticality and other conditions such as when extreme depth & temperature do not require the use of an API 10D type bow spring steel centralizer.

• Soil stabilization -  Used in the post tensioning, soil stabilization and foundation drilling industries. A centralizer and spacer system also can prevent tendon, bolt and nail corrosion and assist in leveling out grout cover.

Dealing with increases in diameters

As with other construction products, more centralizer segments are simply added to accommodate increases in diameter. This removes the need to carry different centralizer or spacer models for different diameters.

Centralizers are very popular for fiberglass and GRP well casings in the oil and gas sectors. A standard API 10D centralizer will generally not fit these composite casings due to variations in diameter, whereas centralizers and spacer systems are totally adjustable for diameter. A really good product also will not damage composite casing materials as steel centralizers can.

What is an API 10D centralizer bow spring standard

The API 10D standard for bow spring steel centralizers is intended to apply to wells that are drilled with dog legs and have a relatively severe level of deviation (average of 30 degree from vertical). Many oil and gas wells do not belong to these categories and thus, other centralizer and spacer system should be considered.
